In the fast-paced world of modern wellness, Chandra Bhedi Pranayama, or “Moon-Piercing Breath,” stands out as a potent yogic technique designed to calm the nervous system. While many are familiar with energizing breaths, this cooling practice focuses on activating the Ida Nadi (the lunar energy channel) to promote deep relaxation and internal balance.
Chandra Bhedi involves inhaling exclusively through the left nostril and exhaling through the right. In Hatha Yoga, the left nostril is linked to the moon’s cooling energy, making this practice the perfect antidote to stress, heat, and hypertension.
Reduces Stress and Anxiety: By stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system, it lowers cortisol levels.
Cools the Body: Ideal for summer months or those suffering from “pitta” imbalances like heartburn.
Improves Sleep Quality: Practicing this before bed helps combat insomnia.
To reap the full cooling and balancing benefits of this practice, it is essential to follow the correct technique. Find a quiet space, sit in a comfortable meditative posture (like Padmasana or Sukhasana), and keep your spine erect.
Prepare the Hand Gesture: Place your left hand on your knee in Jnana Mudra. Use your right hand to form Vishnu Mudra by folding the index and middle fingers toward the palm.
Close the Right Nostril: Gently use your right thumb to close your right nostril.
Inhale Through the Left: Slowly and deeply breathe in through the left nostril only. Feel the cool air entering your system, activating the lunar energy.
The Pause (Optional): Hold your breath for a second or two if comfortable (Antar Kumbhaka), but avoid any strain.
Exhale Through the Right: Close the left nostril with your ring finger and release the thumb from the right nostril. Exhale slowly and completely through the right nostril.
Repeat the Cycle: This completes one round. Always inhale through the left and exhale through the right. Here is a video showing how to practice step by step.
Timing: Start with 5–10 rounds and gradually increase to 5 minutes of practice.
When to Practice: For best results, practice on an empty stomach, ideally in the morning or before bed for better sleep.
Temperature Check: Avoid this practice if you have a cold, cough, or low blood pressure, as it is naturally cooling.
For men, Chandra Bhedi Pranayama offers a natural way to manage performance anxiety and high blood pressure.
Balancing the “solar” energy often dominant in high-stress work environments, aids in better emotional regulation and heart health. It also helps in reducing physical inflammation, which is vital for athletic recovery.
Hormonal imbalances like PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) and PCOD are often exacerbated by chronic stress. Chandra Bhedi Pranayama is highly effective for women’s health because it:
Regulates the Endocrine System: Helps in balancing the pituitary and thyroid glands.
Reduces Testosterone Spikes: Calming the system can help mitigate the stress-induced androgen production common in PCOS.
Soothes Pelvic Congestion: Regular practice improves blood flow and reduces the “heat” associated with cystic inflammation.
Chandra Bhedi Pranayama is a cooling yoga breathing technique known for reducing stress, aiding PCOS/PCOD management, and improving men’s health. Learn how to practice Moon-Piercing Breath to balance your hormones and cool your body naturally.
